Malaysia & Indonesia
Preparation & documentation
Visas & passport requirements
Passport validity: Both British and Portuguese passports must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival (23 Aug 2027) and have at least 2 blank pages.
Malaysia: No visa is required for stays up to 90 days for both British and Portuguese passports.
Indonesia (Lombok): British and Portuguese passports require a Visa on Arrival (VoA).
• Cost: 500,000 IDR (approx. £25) payable by cash or card.
• Skip the queue: Apply for an e-VoA online 1 week before travel: Official e-VoA Portal.
United Arab Emirates (Dubai):
• Transiting only: British passports must be valid for 3 months from the date of transit. Portuguese passports require 6 months.
• Should you wish to leave the airport: Both passports get a free 90-day visitor visa on arrival at immigration. No advance application is needed.
• Requirement: For entry, your passports must have at least 6 months validity remaining.
Mandatory digital forms
These forms are mandatory and must be completed before you reach immigration.
Health & vaccines
Timeline: Visit your GP or Boots travel service 8-12 weeks before departure.
Recommended: Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid are standard. Malaria risk is low in KL and Lombok. Bite avoidance (repellent) is usually sufficient. Check Boots travel advice & price list.
Safety: Avoid "local brew" spirits (Arak) in Lombok due to methanol risks. Stick to the cocktails served within your hotel. Always carry your passport in both countries, as proof of ID is legally required at all times.
Money & local currency
Malaysia (MYR): Malaysian Ringgit.
Indonesia (IDR): Indonesian Rupiah.
The strategy: Use travel cards (Monzo/Starling/Revolut) for hotels and malls in KL. Since you only have one day in KL, you can withdraw a small amount of money to pay for local food or souvenirs. It's a good idea to have some cash for Lombok, as local drivers and smaller beach stalls may not accept cards.
ATMs: Only use ATMs inside banks or secure malls to avoid card skimming. Notify your bank of your travel dates to avoid blocked cards.
Most Malaysian banks at KLIA/KLIA2 (such as Maybank, CIMB, RHB) do not charge foreign ATM fees, though your home bank might. To avoid fees, use major local bank ATMs, select "Without Conversion" to get the mid-market rate.
Digital setup & connectivity
Stay connected across both Malaysia and Indonesia with one data plan. Ideal for navigating, communicating, uploading content to social media, and more. You can use our discount code CARMA15 for 15% OFF.
Offline Access: Open Google Maps → Search "Kuala Lumpur" (or Lombok) → Tap the 3 dots → Download Offline Map. This ensures you can navigate even without signal.
Emergency contacts
Malaysia: Dial 999 (Ambulance/Police). 112 from a mobile.
Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur: (60 3) 2332 9888
Indonesia: Dial 118 (Ambulance) or 110 (Police).
The Oberoi Beach Resort Lombok: +62 370 6138444

Petronas Twin Towers
Take time to admire and photograph the towers from the outside during the day; don't worry, you’ll be coming back later to explore inside the Suria KLCC mall.
Standing 451.9 meters tall, these are the tallest twin towers in the world. Inspired by Islamic geometric patterns, specifically the Rub el Hizb, the 8-pointed star base reflects Malaysia's rich heritage.
Head to the fountains at the front entrance; this way, you can fit both towers in one shot. Crouch to create a more dramatic perspective!
NZ Curry House - KLCC
There’s no better way to start your trip than with local food. This spot sits opposite the Petronas Twin Towers, so you can enjoy traditional dishes with a view. Even better, it’s one of the few places open 24 hours, serving fresh roti canai anytime.
Try plain roti canai or with sugar, and drink teh tarik (milky tea) or teh o ais (iced tea).
8-Hour Car Charter
Standard Sedan • Recommended pick-up time: 12:10
£64.59 (Total for 2 adults)
You only have one day in the city, so this is the most efficient way to see the major landmarks without the exhaustion of navigating public transport or walking in the intense tropical heat.
Share the recommended stops with your driver to explore the highlights of Kuala Lumpur at your own pace.
The real value is the fixed-price convenience: fuel, tolls, and insurance are all included, so there are no surprises. By choosing an 12:10 start, you’ll have time to check in to your hotel and still enjoy exploring Kuala Lumpur.
Stop 1: Batu Caves
It's an iconic landmark in Malaysia for its stunning combination of natural limestone hills, 400 million years of history, and vibrant Hindu culture.
The Batu Caves date back to the 19th century and were recorded by American naturalist William Hornaday in 1878. Today, they are home to a series of Hindu shrines dedicated to Lord Murugan, the significant deity honoured by the iconic golden statue at the entrance.
Be mindful of the monkeys! Avoid making eye contact or waving food around them. To climb the stairs, make sure your knees and shoulders are covered, or you can pay £3 for a covering at the entrance.
Stop 2: WhiteBurger
Our favourite spot for perfectly crafted, juicy burgers in Kuala Lumpur.
The Crispy Chicken Ala Kampung Baru is absolutely irresistible!
Stop 3: Harriston Boutique
It’s a must-visit for chocolate lovers, offering an interactive experience with over 150 types of premium, locally inspired Malaysian chocolates. Perfect for souvenirs or indulging in sweet treats on your honeymoon.
Established in 2005 by a Malaysian entrepreneur, SC Teng, who saw an opportunity in the market. Working as a tour operator at the time, he realised the majority of chocolates sold in Malaysia were imported and designed for Western tastes. Using locally sourced beans from Malaysia, SC Teng then thought of a chocolate brand incorporating Malaysian flavours.
Don’t miss the Harriston almond-panned white chocolate tiramisu and durian chocolates for the ultimate Southeast Asian flavour experience.
Stop 4: Central Market
It's the perfect spot to buy souvenirs, browse local crafts, traditional goods, clothes, food and more.
It was established as a wet market built in 1888. Today, the Central Market is a hub for Malaysian culture, art and craft.
Check out the street just next to the market, Jalan Hang Kasturi, for pop-ups and local delicacies.
Stop 5: River of Life
The River of Life is the birthplace of Kuala Lumpur. The river confluence has been transformed into a vibrant waterfront.
The location is the exact confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers, where the city was founded in the 1850s. This strategic meeting point, meaning "muddy confluence" in Malay, served as the vital waterway for tin miners and traders, sparking the city's development.
This is a great time to admire one of Kuala Lumpur’s most iconic spots, though it’ll likely just be a quick pit stop.
Stop 6: Merdeka Square
It’s a green open space where one of Malaysia’s most significant historical moments took place.
In 1957, the British flag was lowered, and the Malayan flag was first raised, giving birth to Malaysian independence. This square remains a focal point for national celebrations, including the annual Independence Day parade (31st August). The square is surrounded by historically significant British colonial buildings, such as the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, the Royal Selangor Club, and the National History Museum.
The façade of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building features a striking blend of Moorish, Mughal, and British colonial architecture.
Stop 7: Thean Hou Temple
As one of Southeast Asia's largest temples, it's a masterpiece of a six-tiered, traditional Chinese design.
Dedicated to Thean Hou (the goddess of the sea), it is a major landmark for the local Chinese community (circa 42% of residents in Kuala Lumpur). It combines elements of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.
Head to the upper levels for spectacular views of the Kuala Lumpur skyline.
Stop 8: Jalan Alor Street
Perfect for experiencing diverse Malaysian-Chinese street food, live cooking, and lively night market vibes.
Grilled chicken wings, stingray, satay, and char kway teow, alongside exotic fruits like Musang King durian
Stop 9: Mon Chinese Roti
The rotis are handmade on the spot, combining crispy, pan-fried pastry with savoury, cumin-spiced meat. The menu is simple, offering just beef or chicken options. Prices are very affordable at around £1 each.
Stop 10: 32Parfait Ice Cream
It's a must-try for its viral, 32cm tall ice cream cone.
Stop 11: Pavilion Mall
It's a premier status shopping mall with over 700 stores, luxury brands, diverse dining options, and stunning seasonal decorations.
It's an award-winning shopping mall. There's a dedicated precinct (Tokyo Street) on the 6th floor that offers a unique mix of Japanese retail, culture, and dining. It has a vast book shop called BookXcess.
Head to Food Republic at Pavilion Mall and try one of Malaysia’s most iconic dishes: nasi lemak, widely regarded as the country’s most famous local favourite.
If time allows: car charter back to Traders Hotel | End the 8-hour charter here
As your driver will be with you for 8 hours, this will likely be your final ride. It’s the perfect chance to head back to the hotel, drop off your shopping, and freshen up before the last stops of the day. However, you have two options:
If you’d like to freshen up and drop off some of your belongings, ask your driver to take you to the Traders Hotel.
If you’d prefer to continue with the final stops, ask your driver to drop you off at Suria KLCC (Stop 12).
Hotel buggie to Symphony Lake Water Show
Every hour until 22:00, the Symphony Lake Water Show runs for 10 minutes just behind the Petronas Twin Towers. Aim to catch the 21:00 show, then leave some time to explore Suria KLCC afterwards. It’s a great way to unwind and reflect on what’s been a full, fun, and insightful day.
Suria KLCC
It sits at the base of the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, offering a mix of luxury shopping and diverse dining options. This is the perfect time to do some last-minute shopping, grab snacks, or simply wander around one of the top shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur. Bear in mind the mall closes at 22:00.
Saloma Bridge (optional)
It’s a stunning bridge, known for its colour-changing light display, unique betel nut leaf-inspired design, and beautiful views alongside the Petronas Twin Towers.
We’ve marked this as optional because by this point, you may be feeling tired after a long day. While it’s a stunning bridge, skipping it won’t take away from your Kuala Lumpur experience, so see how you feel when the time comes.
Walk back through KLCC Park, a beautiful green space and one of our favourite spots. Don’t miss the KLCC “swimming pool”. It’s not a real pool, but a shallow water feature that reaches just above your ankles, complete with a small waterfall you can walk under. From Suria KLCC, it’s about a 10-minute walk back.
SkyBar at Traders Hotel
Great way to end the day, relaxing with views of the skyline and a cocktail.
Situated on the 33rd floor, it closes at around 01:00. The SkyBar has a mix of cold and warm food options, cocktails, mocktails, wines and more. The kitchen is open until 23:45.
Book a table with direct views of the Petronas Towers at least two weeks in advance.

Questions & answers
This section covers potential questions you may have.
Is the budget available money saved?
Not exactly. This plan doesn’t include miscellaneous expenses like food, drinks, shopping, and other day-to-day costs. While you might not spend every penny, a portion of your budget will likely go toward everyday spending.
Why have some prices changed?
We aim to provide the most up-to-date details and the most optimised itinerary, so some adjustments were necessary. Plus, since we’re planning well in advance, certain prices may naturally fluctuate over time.
Why this Kuala Lumpur itinerary?
We’ve carefully balanced cultural, historical, and modern spots so you can enjoy a complete, well-rounded experience of the city, even in the short time you have.
Flight back from Kuala Lumpur to London
Our recommended return flight includes a layover in Dubai. In the current climate, we wouldn't typically suggest this route; however, as your trip is still some time away, regional conflicts may well be resolved by then.
We recommend checking the latest travel safety advisories closer to your booking date to ensure you feel comfortable with this itinerary.
Are timings 100% accurate?
Since we’re planning this trip well in advance, timings can’t be 100% guaranteed. We’ve checked flights to ensure as much accuracy as possible and suggested a reasonable time at each location. While flight schedules are beyond our control, how long you spend in each spot is entirely up to you. Our recommended timings are there to guide you and help you enjoy quality experiences and make the most of your days.
Can you update the Digital Travel Hub information once my bookings are confirmed?
Yes, once your bookings are confirmed, we can update your Digital Travel Hub for you.
We offer this as an optional add-on for £55, where we re-optimise your entire itinerary based on your confirmed flights, accommodation, and reservations.
This means:
- Adjusting timings so everything flows smoothly around your actual bookings
- Refining each day to make the plan more accurate and easy to follow
- Removing booking links and replacing them with your confirmed details
- Tidying up the hub so it feels clean, final, and ready to use during your trip
Because bookings are often made after the initial plan (and availability can change), this ensures your itinerary stays fully aligned and stress-free when it matters most.
If you'd like us to update your Digital Travel Hub, simply contact us and we will have it ready for you within 7 days.
