The Best eSIM For Travelling Asia In 2025

Planning a trip to Asia in 2025? Stay connected hassle-free with the best travel eSIMs! We’ve compared top providers like iRoamly, Yesim, Airalo, Holafly, and Maya Mobile to help you find the most affordable, flexible, and convenient option for your adventures.

Share:

If you’re finally taking that trip to Asia in 2025, you’ve come to the right place. Many people wonder, “Does Asia have good Wi-Fi?” The answer depends on where you’re headed. In big cities like Kuala Lumpur and Chiang Mai, you’ll find fast and reliable internet, but if your plans include hopping between smaller towns or remote islands, you might struggle with the lack of coverage. That’s why having your own data connection is so important.

Staying connected while travelling doesn’t have to be a headache. Whether you’re trying to navigate unfamiliar streets, upload your latest travel pics, or stay in touch with friends and family, having reliable data is a must. That’s where embedded SIMs (eSIMs) come in. They’ve totally changed the game for us travellers with the way we stay connected abroad, leaving behind the hassle of swapping those tiny physical SIM cards for good.

But with so many eSIM providers out there, how do you pick the right one? We’re breaking it all down for you, comparing popular options like iRoamly, Yesim, Airalo, Holafly, and Maya Mobile to help you figure out which is the best fit for your adventures.

Why eSIMs Make Travel So Much Easier

Remember the stress of hunting for a SIM card at the airport or getting caught out by outrageous roaming fees? Those days are over. eSIMs offer unmatched convenience and flexibility, allowing you to stay connected with just a few taps on your phone.

Here are some of the benefits that make us love them:

  • Easy Activation: Install an eSIM in minutes — no hardware needed.

  • Cheaper Than Roaming: No more surprise roaming fee charges.

  • Perfect for Country-Hopping: Great for anyone travelling to multiple destinations as you can switch networks whenever you need to — for us backpacking through 7 countries in Asia has been very smooth.

  • Ready Before You Land: Set it up before you leave your home country so you can be connected before you even leave the plane.

If you’re someone who values simplicity and practicality, making the switch to an eSIM could change the way you travel. If you’re still not sure what eSIMs are and how they are different from physical SIM cards, then also check out our blog post, Is An eSIM Better Than a Physical SIM Card When Travelling?.

What Makes A Good Travel eSIM?

Not all eSIMs are created equal, and what works for one traveller might not work for another. So, what makes a travel eSIM stand out?

  1. Coverage: A good eSIM should offer reliable coverage in the countries you’re visiting. Spotty service is the last thing you need when you're trying to find your next destination or book a Grab (the equivalent of an Uber in Asia - we talk about this in the blog post 10 Tips On How To Stay Safe While Travelling in Asia).

  2. Unlimited Data Options: If you’re someone who burns through data for maps, uploads, and streaming, having an unlimited data plan can be more beneficial. Not all eSIM providers offer this, but it’s worth considering if you rely heavily on connectivity.

  3. Affordability: This one is pretty obvious, but travelling can get expensive. The best eSIMs give you plenty of data without draining your wallet, offering great value for the cost.

  4. Ease of Use: Nobody wants to spend hours figuring out how to activate their eSIM. A great provider makes the setup simple, with easy-to-follow instructions and quick activation times.

  5. Flexibility: Whether you're on a short city break or a months-long backpacking trip, a good eSIM offers plans tailored to your specific travel style, including options for single or multiple countries.

  6. Extras: Some providers go above and beyond. iRoamly, for example, includes handy tools like a currency converter, tip calculator, and world clock in its app, which is incredibly useful for travellers juggling different time zones and costs.

Comparing The Most Popular eSIM Providers: Prices And Data Packages

When choosing an eSIM for your travels, price and data plans are key factors to consider. But it’s not just about finding the cheapest option, it's also important to look at value for money, especially when it comes to data allowances, network coverage, and whether the provider truly delivers what they promise.

Here’s a quick look at the data plans and pricing of some of the most popular eSIM providers for travel in Asia:

Comparison table of data plans and pricing of the most popular eSIM providers for travel in Indonesia.

The Pros And Cons Of Each Travel eSIM Provider

Now that you have an idea of the prices and data packages, let's take a look at the pros and cons of each provider. We’ve also gone through a bunch of reviews for each company to help you choose the one that’s right for your travels.

  • Pros:

    • Affordable Plans: iRoamly offers budget-friendly options starting as low as $15 for 10GB over 7 days in some Asian countries, making it one of the cheaper options for short-term travel.

    • Extras: The iRoamly app comes with useful features like a currency converter, tip calculator, world clock (with multiple destinations), and more.

    • Easy Setup: Setting up your eSIM is simple through the iRoamly app, which also allows you to manage multiple plans for different countries.

    • Great for Budget Travellers: The prices are very competitive, and the data coverage is solid across Asia.

    Cons:

    • Limited Coverage in Remote Areas: While iRoamly has a good coverage reputation in cities, rural areas or islands may have weaker signals.

    What People Say:

    • Reviewers love iRoamly for its affordable pricing and easy-to-use app. Many travellers appreciate the extra features, especially the currency converter and tip calculator. A few people mentioned that coverage in remote areas could be improved, but for most city travellers, it’s more than enough.

  • Pros:

    • Global Coverage: Airalo offers coverage in over 190 countries, which makes it a great option for international travellers.

    • Multiple Plan Options: From short-term 7-day plans to 30-day plans, Airalo has flexibility for various types of travel. Such as "Asialink".

    Cons:

    • Customer Service: Many people have talked about the slow response times from customer support.

    • Patchy Coverage in Rural Areas: Like other eSIMs, Airalo can sometimes experience slower speeds or weak signals outside big cities.

    What People Say:

    • Airalo is valued for its extensive coverage across many countries. However, customer service tends to be a weak point, and many reviews mention difficulty getting quick responses when they have issues.

  • Pros:

    • Global Coverage: Yesim offers coverage in over 100 countries and is ideal for both short and long-term trips.

    • Easy to Use: The app is straightforward, and the setup process is simple.

    Cons:

    • Higher Prices: Compared to other eSIM providers, Yesim can be a bit pricier for similar plans.

    • Limited Long-Term Options: While they have many plans for short-term travel, long-term packages can be more restrictive.

    What People Say:

    • People appreciate Yesim for the reliable service and global coverage, but many mention that the prices are a little higher compared to other providers offering similar data plans.

  • Pros:

    • Unlimited Data: One of the key selling points for Holafly is their unlimited data plans for the duration of your trip, so if you’re a heavy data user, this is a good option.

    • Easy Setup: It’s quick and simple to activate your eSIM with Holafly.

    Cons:

    • Higher Cost: While unlimited data sounds great, that is the only option they offer, and it comes at a higher price. The 30-day unlimited data plan can cost as much as $59 in certain countries in Asia.

    • Cut-off Speeds: “Unlimited” data isn’t always as unlimited as it sounds. After a certain threshold, speeds can be significantly reduced.

    What People Say:

    • Many travellers enjoy the unlimited data feature but express frustration with the reduction in speed that occurs once a certain amount of data is used. Also, people comment that the pricing may not always justify the speeds.

  • Pros:

    • Budget-Friendly: Maya’s plans are affordable, being a good deal for those on a budget.

    • Simple Interface: The Maya app is easy to navigate, and the setup process is quick.

    Cons:

    • Limited Coverage: Like many other providers, Maya’s coverage can be weaker in more remote areas.

    • Customer Service: Some people have mentioned that Maya’s customer service could be more responsive.

    • Unlimited Data Not Truly Unlimited - some plans that offer '“unlimited data” are restricted to an amount per day e.g. 5GB.

    What People Say:

    • Maya’s pricing makes it popular among those seeking budget options, but some customers note that coverage can be spotty, and the customer support is not as responsive as they would like.

Why We Recommend iRoamly Travel eSIM

After breaking down the pros and cons of each eSIM provider, we think iRoamly stands out as a top choice for travellers. It’s not just about getting data, it’s about having an eSIM that’s affordable, flexible, and incredibly easy to use.

In fact, here’s something most people don’t realise: eSIM companies typically buy their data in bulk from the same network providers. This means that in terms of connectivity and coverage, most eSIMs offer similar performance, no matter which provider you go with. What truly sets them apart are the packages, prices, ease of use, customer service, and those extra features that make your life easier while travelling.

For us, iRoamly is an easy choice when it comes to staying connected while travelling. It’s affordable, flexible, and super simple to use. Their budget-friendly plans won’t break the bank, whether you’re on a quick getaway or a longer adventure.

They offer a variety of plans, such as unlimited data, total data or daily data packages, so you can pick the one that fits your trip without paying for extra data you won’t use. Plus, with coverage in over 150 countries, it’s perfect for longer trips across multiple destinations.

What we really love is how easy it is to switch plans whenever you need. If our travel plans change or we need more data, upgrading is not a problem, and if we have any issues iRoamly customer support is available 24/7.

On top of all that, the app itself is clean, easy to use, and built with travellers in mind. If you’re not sure how much data you will need, you can use this super useful tool called “Travel Data Calculatorby iRoamly.

Overall, iRoamly keeps things simple and affordable, making it our go-to for travel connectivity.

10 Tips On How To Stay Safe While Travelling in Asia

Travelling in Asia is an incredible experience, but staying safe is key. From personal experiences with money scams to scary taxi rides, in this blog you will discover essential tips to help you travel smart and confidently across the continent.

Share:

Asia is an incredible place to explore, with so much to see, do, and experience. However, while Asia is an exciting and beautiful continent to explore, safety should always be a priority. Whether you're navigating busy streets in Vietnam, hiking the mountains of Nepal, or soaking in the culture in Thailand, staying safe should be part of your travel planning. Here are some practical tips to help you stay secure and make the most of your travels!

1. Use Trusted Transport Apps Like Grab and Bolt

Getting around in Asia is usually pretty easy, but using ride-hailing apps like Grab and Bolt (basically like Uber) adds an extra layer of security. These apps allow you to book rides in advance and track your journey in real-time. You can even share your ride details with a friend or family member for peace of mind.

These apps also have built-in safety features like emergency support. This is a massive relief as we discovered one morning in Vietnam, we were in a Grab car at 5 a.m. when the driver took a wrong turn and wanted to drop us off in a different location. The app noticed and immediately asked us if we needed assistance. It turned out to be a misunderstanding, but it was reassuring to know the Grab app was keeping an eye on our safety.

2. Invest in AirTags for Your Luggage

Losing your luggage can be a nightmare, especially when you’re far from home. One of the best ways to keep track of your bags while travelling in Asia is by using Apple’s AirTags in your checked luggage. These tiny devices allow you to track your bags on your phone, so if your luggage goes missing or gets misplaced, you can easily locate it. It’s a simple but effective way to avoid unnecessary stress, especially when moving between flights or transport.

3. Use eSIMs to Stay Connected

In today’s world, staying connected is essential — especially when you’re navigating new countries. One of the easiest and best ways to stay safe while travelling in Asia is staying connected with eSIMs.

We highly recommend using iRoamly for your eSIM needs. With iRoamly, you get great coverage and fast internet across many Asian countries, all while avoiding the hassle of physical SIM cards. Whether you need directions, are booking a ride, or just want to check in with family or friends, having internet on the go makes everything easier. Plus, with iRoamly’s flexible eSIM plans you can explore a variety of plans that fit every need and budget, so you won’t have to worry about overpaying with other companies or getting scammed at the airport.

If you’re not familiar with eSIMs, don’t worry! You can learn more about them in our blog post titled “Is An eSIM Better Than A Physical SIM Card When Travelling?, where we break down everything you need to know, PLUS, we will also be giving you 5% OFF your next iRoamly eSIM.

4. Secure Your Belongings

When you're out and about, always keep your valuables close. We use bum bags to carry essentials like passports, phones, and wallets. It’s important to keep an eye on your stuff in crowded places, as pickpocketing is more common in touristy spots.

Most hotels have safe deposit boxes, but we still like to lock up anything valuable inside our backpacks with our trusted padlocks when we're out.

5. Ask About Local Safety

Before you head out for the day, it's always smart to ask your hotel about the safety of the area, especially if you're exploring a new neighbourhood. Many places in Asia are totally safe, but there are also areas that can be sketchy, particularly after dark. Hotel staff are usually very helpful and can give you tips on where to go and where to avoid.

6. Motorbike Safety is a Must

In countries like Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia, motorbikes are a popular way to get around, but they can be risky, especially if you're not familiar with the local traffic rules. It’s important to remember that the roads can be chaotic, and accidents are common. When renting a motorbike, always wear a helmet, keep your phone tucked away while riding, and stay alert to the traffic around you. In some places, riders don’t use brake lights or might drive on the wrong side of the road, so be cautious and make sure you’re comfortable before renting a bike.

7. Save Important Numbers

It’s always a good idea to keep emergency contacts handy, including your country’s embassy or consulate, in case you need them during your trip. It’s also helpful to know the emergency numbers for police and ambulances of the country you plan to visit.

We’ve put together a simple guide, which you can download completely FREE with Global Emergency Contacts To Keep Handy.

8. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

No matter where you are in Asia, it’s crucial to stay aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye on your belongings and trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right — whether it’s a situation, a ride, or a place — don’t hesitate to leave.

Also, it’s a good idea to avoid being out too late in unfamiliar areas. We try to avoid walking around late at night in places we’re not familiar with and always make sure we have reliable transport back to our accommodation. A top tip is that in smaller cities, apps like Grab don’t run 24/7, which means if you arrive on an early bus at 4a.m., you will likely be approached by taxi drivers who will massively overcharge you, so plan your trip accordingly and check with your next accommodation about picking you up or working hours for ride-hailing apps.

9. Always Count Your Money

When you’re travelling in Asia, always make it a habit to count your money — whether it’s change after a purchase or cash from a currency exchange. In some countries, tourists unfamiliar with the local currency can be easy targets for short-changing. We’ve had it happen to us several times, and luckily, by paying attention, we avoided losing money.

For instance, some friends we met in Vietnam exchanged money at a local exchange. The man counted the cash in front of them, then asked for it back to recount. Trusting him, they didn’t double-check again. Later, at their hotel, they realised half the money was missing—likely swiped during the “recount.”

The lesson? Always count, recount, and count again. Don’t hesitate to take your time, and never hand back cash without recounting it yourself. Being thorough takes less time than you think, especially when it can save you from unnecessary losses.

10. Follow Local Laws & Customs

Each country in Asia has its own unique set of laws and customs. Make sure to do a little research before you go so that you can respect the local culture and avoid any problems. Some places may have specific rules around dress codes, alcohol consumption, or behaviour, so it’s always a good idea to check before you go. We always check the GOV.UK travel advice website, but depending on where you are based, you may prefer to check a different source. We will be creating guides around this topic for countries we have visited, so if you would like to know more, make sure to join our newsletter below!

Is An eSIM Better Than A Physical SIM Card When Travelling?

Wondering if an eSIM is better than a physical SIM card for your travels? We'll break down the pros and cons, including why we rely on iRoamly eSIMs to stay connected — no SIM swaps, no language hassles, just instant setup and flexible data plans!

Share:

In today’s digital age, staying connected while travelling is more essential than ever. Whether it’s for navigation, sharing travel moments, or keeping up with work emails, a reliable internet connection can be a travel game-changer. But what’s the best way to stay connected abroad? If you’re wondering whether an eSIM is better than a physical SIM card for travel, we’ve got you covered.

In this post, we’ll look at why eSIMs, including the company we use and trust — iRoamly, are an excellent choice for travellers. With options for easy sign-up, affordable plans, and global coverage, iRoamly provides an ideal solution for staying connected on your adventures.

What Is An eSIM?

First, let’s clarify the difference between an eSIM and a traditional SIM card.

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM that lets you activate a cellular plan without the need for a physical SIM card. With compatible devices, travellers can install a mobile plan digitally, often by simply scanning a QR code. Unlike physical SIMs, which you have to buy, swap, and store, eSIMs make the entire setup process quicker and easier.

Why eSIMs Are Becoming Popular Among Travellers

Travellers are increasingly opting for eSIMs, and here’s why:

  1. No Language Barriers for Support
One common issue with physical SIM cards is dealing with foreign-language customer support. When we used physical SIMs in countries like Vietnam, Thailand, or Nepal, any issues with the SIMs were tricky to resolve because all texts and customer support options were in the local language. Now that we use iRoamly, we can reach out to customer support in our preferred language or browse their website for support articles. This way, we never feel lost if we run into issues or have questions about our plan.

  2. Easy Setup Anywhere, Anytime

There’s no need to locate a physical store to get an eSIM. Providers like iRoamly let you purchase an eSIM online before or even during your trip, and the best part is that you can activate it in minutes and skip the hassle of hunting down a local SIM shop — ideal for frequent travellers or anyone landing in new destinations outside regular business hours. Have you ever had to order a taxi really late at night from the airport, trying to get to your pick up point without losing the free airport wifi? Well we have, and let me tell you, a true pain in the ass, from now on we will set up our eSIM as soon as we get on the plane!

  3. Dual SIM Functionality

For phones with eSIM capability, you can use both an eSIM and a physical SIM simultaneously. This means you can keep your home SIM active (for essential calls or SMS) while using a local eSIM plan for data, all without paying roaming charges.

  4. Flexibility with Multi-Destination Plans

With an eSIM, switching to a new region or country is as simple as updating your digital plan. You can stop struggling to open the SIM card slot with earrings!

  5. Eco-Friendly

Since there’s no physical plastic involved, eSIMs are a more sustainable option for environmentally conscious travellers. No more collecting (or losing!) tiny SIM cards.

  6. Security

With an eSIM, because you can’t physically remove it, you don’t risk it being lost or stolen, which can happen with physical SIM cards.

  7. Affordable and Transparent Pricing
Physical SIMs and international roaming can come with hidden fees and unexpected charges. An eSIM like iRoamly offers clear and affordable pricing, so you know exactly what you’re paying for.

Are There Downsides To Using An eSIM When Travelling?

While eSIMs offer a lot of convenience, there are a few limitations to consider:

  • Device Compatibility: Not all devices support eSIMs, so it’s crucial to check if your smartphone is eSIM-compatible before relying on one. The majority of phones released in the last 3 years support eSIM functionality. For specific device compatibility, check iRoamly’s eSIM compatible device list.

  • Complex Set Up: Some people may struggle to activate and connect their eSIM, so it’s important to chose an eSIM provider that makes the installation process easy but will also provide support for any questions you may have. We found iRoamly to have a very straightforward set up, and they even have a dedicated section on their website to support with setting up and managing your travel eSIM.

  • Data Plan Options: While many eSIM providers offer international coverage, some regions may have limited or pricier options for eSIM plans. Be sure to compare prices and coverage before committing to an eSIM-only plan.

Why We Recommend iRoamly For Travellers

When it comes to eSIM options, iRoamly stands out for its affordable and flexible travel plans. With wide coverage in 150+ countries and flexible data packages tailored for travellers, iRoamly is a great choice for short trips or longer stays.

Why Choose iRoamly?

  • Simple Activation Process: iRoamly makes it easy to get started with just a few clicks. After purchasing your plan online, all you need to do is scan a QR code to activate your eSIM. It’s quick, easy, and can be done anywhere — even before your trip.

  • Comprehensive Customer Support: Language barriers can be frustrating when dealing with physical SIM issues abroad. iRoamly’s support team offers multilingual assistance, so you’ll always have help when you need it, without struggling to understand foreign messages or instructions.

  • Travel-Friendly Plans: From single-country options to broader international coverage, iRoamly offers a variety of affordable plans that suit different travel needs, with as much or as little data as you need. Unlike physical SIMs that might limit you to a single region, iRoamly’s plans provide flexibility for multi-country trips.

Whether you’re city-hopping in Europe or like us, backpacking in Southeast Asia, iRoamly’s network keeps you online. How To Set Up Your iRoamly eSIM

Getting started with iRoamly’s eSIM is easy and as simple as these steps:

  1. Purchase a Plan: Visit the iRoamly website to browse their range of data plans and pick one that suits your travel needs.

  2. Activate Your eSIM: After purchasing, you’ll receive a QR code. Simply scan the code with your phone, and your eSIM will be activated in seconds.

  3. Stay Connected: You’re ready to explore! No swapping SIMs, no searching for local shops — just instant connectivity wherever you go.

eSIM vs Physical SIM: Which Is Best For Your Trips?

For most travellers, an eSIM offers unmatched convenience, especially with iRoamly’s user-friendly plans and support. Here’s a quick comparison to help you decide:

  • If you’re hopping across multiple countries or want flexibility: An eSIM like iRoamly’s is ideal, as you can switch plans and stay connected, without the hassle of buying new SIMs.

  • If you want to keep your home number active: An eSIM lets you use both your home and travel numbers simultaneously on most compatible devices.

  • If you’re travelling to a single country for an extended period: A local physical SIM might sometimes offer slightly cheaper options for long-term stays, but without the convenience of eSIMs.

  • If you value reliable support: With travel eSIM companies like iRoamly, you’ll have access to multi-language speaking customer support wherever you go, eliminating the stress of handling issues in a foreign language or remote locations where SIM card shops may not be available.

For convenience, security, and ease of setup, eSIMs are hard to beat — especially for travellers who prefer a more reliable experience.

Final Thoughts: eSIM Or Physical SIM For Travel?

So, is an eSIM better than a physical SIM card when travelling? In many cases, yes. The convenience, flexibility, and simplicity of eSIMs make them an ideal choice for travellers who want to stay connected without the stress of finding local SIMs to purchase when we land. But at the end of the day, this will vary for different people and their travel needs. For us, since we started using iRoamly, travel has felt so much easier. No more searching for local SIM cards, navigating language barriers for support, or dealing with unexpected network issues. With iRoamly’s eSIM, we get reliable connectivity and responsive customer service wherever we go — making it an easy choice.
