Where To Find The Best Momos In Kathmandu

Share:

If you’ve heard of Nepal, you’ve likely heard of the famous momo. Momos are a type of dumpling from Tibetan and Nepalese cuisine and a popular street food, loved by locals and visitors alike. These tasty little snacks are made with a thin dough wrapper filled with seasoned meat or vegetables. They’re typically spicy, though not all momos are made the same way! You’ll find them steamed, fried, or even served in a spicy broth, each method bringing a unique texture and taste that will leave you craving more.

In Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, momos are everywhere — on nearly every corner. With that in mind, you simply cannot leave Nepal without trying these delicacies! But where can you find the tastiest, most authentic momos in Kathmandu? In this post, we’ll take you through two top spots that offer not only delicious flavours but are also super affordable!

Narayan Dai Ko Masangalli Ko Famous Mo:Mo:

Located near the vibrant Durbar Square, in the narrow streets of Masangalli, Narayan Dai Ko Masangalli Ko Momo is the go-to spot for anyone craving mouth-watering, flavourful, and well-seasoned momos. This local gem has been serving up perfect momos for years, and they have mastered the art of momo-making, with dumplings that are juicy on the inside and perfectly chewy on the outside.

Whether you’re in the mood for chicken, buffalo, or vegetarian options, this place delivers on taste, authenticity, and affordability. The chicken and buffalo momos are especially popular, filled with a savoury filling seasoned with Nepali spices, adding a subtle smoky flavour. The momos here are served piping hot, and you can try them with a spicy broth that gives each bite an extra kick.

What makes this spot special isn’t just the food, but the location. It’s an ideal stop for a quick bite while exploring the historic streets of Durbar Square. The atmosphere is casual, with people coming in and out, grabbing a quick bite between their sightseeing adventures. Despite being just steps away from tourist attractions like Asan Bazaar and Durbar Square, the momos here are shockingly affordable.

You can get a plate of 10 steaming hot and delicious momos for just a few hundred rupees — perfect if you’re looking for an authentic taste of Nepal without breaking the bank.

Lumbini Tandoori Fast Food & Naan House

Another local favourite, Lumbini Tandoori Fast Food & Naan House brings a mix of Nepali and Indian flavours to the table. Known for its tandoori treats and naan, their momos are a hidden gem that keep people coming back.

Located in the heart of Thamel, Lumbini Tandoori offers some of the best momos in Kathmandu, and the cosy atmosphere and rich flavours make it a must-visit. If you’re after something a bit different, try their fried momos for an extra crispy texture on the outside that contrasts with the juicy filling inside - we absolutely loved it and came back another 3 times. These momos come with a mildly spicy tomato-based dipping sauce that’s bursting with flavour, combining fresh coriander and garlic for a hint of tang and freshness. Max thought the sauce was weird at first, he said it tasted like orange juice! But it really grew on him the more we came back to this restaurant.

They also specialise in Tandoori-style momos, a unique twist on the classic. The momos are marinated in spices and cooked in a tandoor (clay oven), giving them a smoky flavour that makes them stand out from the crowd. If you’re up for trying something new, these are a must!

Lumbini Tandoori is a hit with both locals and tourists for its quality food at incredibly reasonable prices. Whether you’re visiting for a sit-down meal or grabbing takeout before heading out for a day of exploration, you can be sure to get a great deal without missing out on taste.

Affordable and Delicious: The Perfect Combo

The beauty of Kathmandu’s momo culture lies not just in the incredible flavour of these dumplings but in their affordability. Both Narayan Dai Ko Masangalli Ko Momo and Lumbini Tandoori Fast Food & Naan House serve top-notch momos at budget-friendly prices that won’t disappoint. Momo is a dish that really captures what Nepali street food is about - fresh, with lots of spices, and incredibly satisfying.

So, next time you’re in Kathmandu, make sure to stop by one (or both!) of these spots and treat yourself to this authentic food experience. Enjoy the momos, and don't forget to share your experience in the comments section of this blog! Any other momo hidden gems we should know about?
